St. James the Apostle Anglican Church

St. James the Apostle, an Anglican parish in Peel Village, calls itself diverse and united in its efforts 'to love God and to love our neighbours'. It belongs to the Diocese of Toronto and worships from the Book of Alternative Services, saying the Apostles' or Nicene Creed at the Eucharist, and all who are baptized are welcome to receive communion.

St. James the Apostle stands on Cathedral Road in Peel Village, about a hundred metres in from Nanwood Drive off Main Street South. The parish was formed after the Second World War, when new housing in Peel Village and Bramalea led to two new Anglican parishes, St. James in Peel Village and St. Joseph of Nazareth in Bramalea. Its first services were held in Gordon Graydon School on Guest Street.

The first building on the site went up in 1960 and was the place of worship until 1989; it is now the Upper Hall. The present church was built in 1988 and 1989 and consecrated on 29 December 1996 by Bishop Victoria Matthews, whom the parish’s history names as the first female bishop in the Anglican Church of Canada.

The Holy Eucharist is celebrated on Sunday mornings at ten and again on Wednesdays at ten, after Morning Prayer at nine. The parish is served by an interim priest-in-charge.

What to expect

Services follow the Book of Alternative Services, the 'green book', with hymns from Common Praise, the 'blue book'. A bulletin handed out at the door contains most of what is needed, with the congregation's responses in bold. The Sunday Eucharist has four readings, from the Old Testament, the Psalms, the New Testament letters and a Gospel, followed by a sermon.
