St. Paul's United Church
St. Paul's United Church puts Jesus Christ 'at the very center' of its life and sums up its faith as 'Community, Courage, & Commitment – in Christ'. It calls discipleship its primary calling, holds that each person is 'a sacred child of God', and speaks of a commitment to intercultural ministry. It is a congregation of the United Church of Canada.
St. Paul’s United Church stands on Main Street South at the corner of John Street, a block south of the Four Corners in downtown Brampton. It is a massive cruciform church of rusticated Credit Valley brownstone, with two towers on its west front and a slate roof. The city’s heritage designation by-law of 1985 names its architects as W. H. Mallory & Son of Toronto and records that it opened on 6 February 1886.
The congregation began as Primitive Methodist. The by-law dates it to 1834, when William Lawson and John Elliott established it, meeting at first in Elliott’s home and then in a church built in the 1840s at Chapel Street and Queen Street East. Through the church unions of 1884 and 1925, St. Paul’s became a congregation of the United Church of Canada.
Sunday worship is at ten in the morning, upstairs in Sanderson Hall, entered from the parking-lot door on John Street.
