St. Eugene de Mazenod Parish
St. Eugene de Mazenod is a Polish Roman Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Toronto, served by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Catholics confess the Nicene Creed, receive the seven sacraments, and hold that the bread and wine of the Mass become the body and blood of Christ. It is named for the Oblates' founder, St. Eugene de Mazenod, and keeps a shrine to Our Lady of Ludźmierz, whom it honours as Our Lady of Good Counsel.
St. Eugene de Mazenod stands on Steeles Avenue West at Churchville Road, in the south-west of the city, and is run by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate for Polish Catholics. Its own site calls it St. Eugene de Mazenod Parish and the Shrine of Our Lady of Ludźmierz; the archdiocese lists it as a mission, the status Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic gave the community by decree on 31 July 1998.
Weekly Mass in Polish began in Brampton on 31 October 1988, when Polish Catholics served by the Oblate parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe in Mississauga started meeting in Grace United Church on Main Street North; in September 1998 the Sunday Masses moved to St. Augustine Secondary School on Drinkwater Road. Pope John Paul II blessed the cornerstone for the church, a stone from the grave of St. Peter, in Rome in May 1998, and the land for the church was bought in January 2001. In July 2002 Cardinal Józef Glemp, the Primate of Poland, crowned the parish’s copy of the statue of Our Lady of Ludźmierz, which John Paul II had blessed in 1997.
On weekends Mass is celebrated in Polish on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and in English on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.; a Sunday-evening Mass in Polish is held at 6:00. Weekday Masses are at 8:30 a.m. from Monday to Saturday and at 7:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, all in Polish except the Thursday evening Mass, which is in English.
